The Athena Art Project

Mission
The Athena Art Project was established in 1996 as a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization that supports the artistic endeavors of women.

The Athena Art Project is organized with these principles in mind:

  1. Art can and does change the world.
  2. Women are worthy.
  3. The Gulf Coast region, and Houston in particular, is fertile ground for creativity and art appreciation of all kinds.

Excellence in Art Award
The Athena Art Project is pleased to announce that the recipient of its inaugural Excellence in Art Award is Gretchen Phillips, a musical artist who first began pushing the boundaries of women’s music nearly 20 years ago.

Born in Galveston and raised in Houston, Texas, Gretchen Phillips graduated from the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts before moving to Austin.

Her clever, engaging, well-crafted, yet accessible music speaks to and for lesbians everywhere, and her bands Two Nice Girls and Girls in the Nose marked important milestones in the history of women’s music.

For the purpose of re-releasing her music to a new generation of listeners, and for the purpose of preserving her contributions to the history and culture of women’s music, the Athena Art Project is pleased to present Gretchen Phillips with its first Excellence in Art Award, which includes a grant in the amount of $5000.
